Past Events

Choir has been running since early 2011. Here are some of the events we've been involved in.

Summer Concert, July 2019

On Sunday 21st July, we held our annual Summer Concert at Chelwood Baptist Church, just outside Adswood. We decided on a change of venue because Walthew House had been roasting hot for the past two years and Chelwood Baptist Church solved the parking problem. The new venue turned out to be perfect for our needs.

The concert was split into two parts, with 'Adiemus', 'I Saved The World Today', 'When We Were Young' and 'True Colours' in the first half, ending with a bit of audience participation with some Rock 'n' Roll numbers. I think we had more choir members singing this year as we made a really nice sound. Sarah and Claire sang solo parts and lovely harmonies on 'True Colours' and Karen and Myra were great on 'Adiemus'.

In the second half we sang 'The Longest Time', 'WW1 Medley', 'Make Your Own Kind of Music' and 'Faith / Freedom', plus an Abba medley for the audience to join in with. There was a degree of uncertainty over including 'The Longest Time' as it proved a difficult song for us to learn, so we were relieved to get through it with no major slip ups!

It was wonderful to get so much support from everyone and I think this was our best concert to date. Thanks to everyone involved and see you next time!

May 2019

We were invited to sing at Brinnington Hall Care Home one Sunday afternoon in May. It's a lovely new building with impressive facilities and we were welcomed by an appreciative audience.

In general, we didn't sing harmonies but concentrated on well know sing-a-long numbers so that the residents could join in if they wanted to. We even had the staff dancing in the aisles at one point!

December 2018

The choir had a tree at St George's Christmas Tree Festival for the first time. This annual event is a popular attraction that brought in 4000 visitors this year.

On Sunday 9th December we sang at Walthew House's annual Christmas Carol Concert. This has become something of a tradition for the choir as we spent our first few years there on a Sunday afternoom. We sang "Step Into Christmas" (Elton John) and "Mary's Boy Child" (Boney M).

On 12th December we had a warm reception at Runnymede Court where we sang a collection of Christmas songs.

Summer Concerts, July 2018

We had two performances to end our summer term and showpiece the songs we'd been learning for the last 12 months.

On Saturday 14th July, we held our usual summer concert at Walthew House. We chose the Saturday to avoid clashing with the World Cup final and the Wimbledon Men's Final (although there turned out to be no British interest in either). The room was like a sauna (again), but it didn't stop us enjoying the occasion and I think we did an excellent job of the 6 song set.

We started with the first of 3 medleys, "Calamity Jane" followed by an immediate change of pace in "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables. Next was the challenging "Bohemian Rhapsody" for which we can thank longstanding member Ian :-). Our most modern piece was "This Is Me" from The Greatest Showman movie, followed by the "Jersey Boys" medley. We finished with the uplifting "Dolly Parton" medley.

We repeated the performance for the residents of Runnymede Court Care Home in Edgeley on Wednesday 18th July. Helen also threw in a couple of sing-a-long songs - "Moon River" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" which we hadn't sung before (but we all knew of course). We had an appreciative audience who couldn't wait to invite us back!

Summer Concert, 11th July 2017

We had an excellent turnout for our Summer Concert at Walthew House. The room was stifling hot and I think we could have made a fortune selling ice creams (or even buckets of water for plunging heads into)! Nevertheless, the choir was in good voice and performed a set of ten songs admirably with our friends from BASIC.

In the first half, we started with old favourite "Rhythm of Life", then gave "Put A Little Love in your Heart" its first public airing. Then came "Come Fly With Me", sung acapella. We finished the first half with a couple of new songs, "Fever" and the emotion-stirring "On My Own".

The choir served drinks, snacks and cakes during the interval, while everyone tried to cool down. We re-opened with "Hallelujah, Get Happy", then a run of three new songs: "Memory", "Could it be Magic" and the tricky "Man in the Mirror" - we'd obviously been doing our homework as I think this was the best we've performed it. BASIC took front of stage for the finale "Something Inside So Strong".

Thanks to everyone who came to listen to us. We had a great time singing for you!

Concert for the Parkers, 10th Feb 2017

A very full St Georges Church hosted a fund-raising event for the Parker family on Friday evening, who were dealt a cruel blow when mother Jo was badly injured by a falling tree in Lyme Park. We were treated to performances by Helen and colleagues of popular classical string pieces from composers including Tchaikovsky and John Williams. St Georges school choir delighted us and women's choir Smithey Belles performed magnificently.

Stockport Community Choir sung "Come Fly With Me" and "Hallelujah" before joining the other two choirs for a magnificent and uplifting finale of "Sing" (written by Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber) and "Something Inside So Strong" (Labi Siffre's 1990 hit).
